Alina’s memories of summers spent with her grandparents are hazy and a little sur-real; caught up in the stress of everyday life, those summers in the village haven’t crossed her mind for years. But now, in the heart of nature, where everything hums and rustles, surrounded by sounds and scents, the memories return. And before she knows it, she’s fallen in love not just with the house and its surrounding forests, but also with her childhood friend Elias. Yet there are some things that Alina must free herself from before she can build a new life.

Als ihr wohlgeordnetes Leben ins Wanken gerät, flüchtet Alina aus dem hektischen Frankfurt zu dem einzigen Menschen, der ihr einfällt: ihr Großvater, der in einem kleinen brandenburgischen Dorf lebt. Seit achtzehn Jahren hat sie keinen Kontakt mehr zu ihm. Der alte Mann wohnt allein in einem viel zu großen, renovierungsbedürftigen Haus am Waldrand. Er hält Hühner, pflegt den Garten, backt Brot, beobachtet Biber – und nimmt seine Enkelin bei sich auf, ohne viele Fragen zu stellen. Dunkel und fast ein wenig unwirklich sind Alinas Kindheitserinnerungen an die Ferien bei ihren Großeltern; im Alltagsstress gefangen, hat sie seit Jahren nicht mehr an die Sommer im Dorf gedacht. Nun, inmitten der Natur, kehren die Erinnerungen zurück. Ehe sie sichs versieht, verliebt sie sich nicht nur in den Ort und die umliegenden Wälder. With the sea always before her eyes, Caja immerses herself in a world to which she feels much more attached than to her own, especially as the street artist Juran slowly conquers her heart. But on the trail of the mo-bile phone owner, she is drawn to Berlin, where she finally finds answers. And perhaps herself. Franziska Fischer writes tenderly, with a light, almost floating touch about a woman trying to find the path to herself.

So hat sich Caja ihr Leben nicht vorgestellt: Seit Jahren malt sie nur noch Auftragsillustrationen, ihre Ambitionen als Künstlerin hat sie aufgegeben. In Graz, wohin sie ihrem Ehemann Ben zuliebe gezogen ist, findet sie nur schwer Anschluss und verbringt die meiste Zeit in ihrem Atelier. Die Träume vom Reisen schiebt sie immer wieder auf. Erst als Caja das Smartphone einer Fremden findet und damit deren gesamtes Leben in der Hand hält, beginnt sie, ihren eigenen Alltag, ihre Wünsche und Sehnsüchte zu überdenken. Und dann überredet ihre lebenslustige Freundin Jolie sie auch noch zu einer ungewöhnlichen Reise. Auf einem Roadtrip mit Jolie und Ludwig, einem liebenswerten älteren Herrn, den sie unterwegs aufgabeln, landen sie in einem Künstlerhaus an der Küste Italiens. Das Meer immer vor Augen, taucht Caja ein in eine Welt, der sie sich viel zugehöriger fühlt als ihrer eigenen, zumal der Straßenkünstler Juran langsam ihr Herz erobert. Doch auf den Spuren der Handybesitzerin zieht es sie weiter nach Berlin, wo sie Antworten findet – und anfängt, sich endlich die richtigen Fragen zu stellen ...
