AND THE SEA AHEAD
A Novel, ca. 360 pages
Autumn 2020

A melancholy novel that will make you feel good, a story about friendship, love and everything in between.
Two best friends, an old man and the sea.

‘I too was born near the sea.’
‘Then you know how it is. Difficult to live without it.’

For years, Caja has been painting nothing but illustrations to order, she has given up her ambi-tions as an artist. She moved to Graz for the love of her husband Ben, but she finds it hard to connect and spends most of her time alone in her atelier. She keeps putting off her dreams of travelling. Only when her fun-loving friend Jolie comes to visit and Caja finds a stranger's smartphone and with it her entire life, she begins to reconsider her daily routines, her wishes and desires. On a road trip with Jolie and Ludwig, an elderly gentleman whom they pick up along the way, they end up in an artists' house on the Italian coast. With the sea always before her eyes, Caja immerses herself in a world to which she feels much more attached than to her own, especially as the street artist Juran slowly conquers her heart. But on the trail of the mo-bile phone owner, she is drawn to Berlin, where she finally finds answers. And perhaps herself.

Franziska Fischer writes tenderly, with a light, almost floating touch about a woman trying to find the path to herself.
