An unbiased, personal, charming, and sometimes gently mocking love letter

What Annette Dittert Experienced as the ARD’s Correspondent on the Brexit Island

"This island was love at first sight for me.“
Annette Dittert

When Annette Dittert stood in front of Downing Street at midnight on January 31, 2020, to report live for ARD evening news that Brexit had finally been completed that night, tears suddenly came to her eyes just before going on air. London had long since become her home. Now the break with the EU was irreversible. It was a depressing day for her and
many Britons who had hoped for a different outcome until the very end.
Ten years later, Annette Dittert wonders what has become of the country. She takes us on a journey across the island: we visit the Royal Albert Hall and the House of Lords, swim with the women's group ‘Blue Tits’ in the sea on the east coast of the island, chat with Scots, priests and earls. And we are guests of the author on her narrowboat Emilia, a small colourful steel boat on Regent's Canal, right in the centre of London. The result is a multifaceted portrait of the idiosyncratic and charming British, whose precarious economic and
social situation – not only as a result of Brexit – is felt in everyday life, yet who always maintain their composure.
