Women sleep worse than men. They have more difficulty falling asleep, they sleep less soundly, and the deep sleep phases that are so important for night-time recovery are shorter. On the one hand, there are biological reasons for this. We now know that there are receptors in all female tissues and organs to which the female sex hormone oestrogen binds, interfering with countless bodily processes. The female cycle, pregnancy and the menopause therefore have a massive impact on women's sleep. On the other hand, social factors also play a major role.
