jubilant and the lottery is the pastime of the hour. Baron von Sothen has been doing good business selling lottery tickets – and leaving
many people worse off than they started. He lives a lavish lifestyle in a small castle on Mount Cobenzl – that is, until he is shot dead.
Bad luck for the greedy baron, but a stroke of good luck for Chief Inspector Janek Pokorny, because when murder strikes in high society,
the young countess Aurelia von Kolowitz is not far away. Yet the young amateur criminalist has other things to worry about: her publisher
wants to stop publishing her caricatures, her father wants to marry her off to the owner of a confectionery factory, and Janek, who’d had
hopes of taking her to the theatre after they last worked on a case together, hasn’t been in touch.
As usual, the men in Aurelia’s life cause nothing but trouble. But then the late Baron’s widow appears on the scene and – when it comes to
greed and malice – she puts the men in the shade.
