Don’t Play With Your Food!
Never before so many people took such an effort to fill their sandwich: with a well-stocked fridge, a virtuous stroke of the kife and a good touch of humour many bread-artists took a chance at well-known masterpieces by Leonardo da Vinci, Frida Kahlo or Joseph Beuys. Some surprisingly close to the original like Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Ear Ring made of pork sausage and pear on rye bread, some with more artistic license like the loaf wrapped in paper as homage to Christo and Jeanne-Claude.
The spectre of different materials and techniques we see in these creative jam sand-wiches, cheese and ham rolls are multi-faceted as the artworks themselves. It spans from cream cheese impasto to accurate avocado arrangements and filigreed cucum-ber carving.
Hardly ever before it was such a joy to tuck in art history.
Marie Sophie Hingst studied history and East Asian studies in Berlin, Lyon and Los Angeles, and did her PhD at Trinity College in Dublin. On 18th July 2018 Marie Sophie Hingst started the hashtag #KunstGeschichteAlsBrotbelag which jumped within days to rank#1 of German twitter trends.
