Ernst H. Gombrich

Ernst H. Gombrich, author of the international classic "The Story of Art" and other bestsellers, was probably the best-known art historian of his time. He was born in Vienna in 1909 and died in London in 2001. He moved to London in 1936 to work for the Warburg Institute where he later became Director. He worked also for the BBC, and was made Professor of the History of the Classical Tradition at London University. Among his many honours were the Erasmus Price, the Hegel Price, the Wittgenstein Price and the Goethe Price. He was knighted in 1972 and appointed a member of the Order of Merit in 1988.
