Powerful female colours

What sort of woman was that who travelled to far-off America at an early age, who taught herself photography, lived on her own, unmarried? Gabriele Münter (1877–1962) was an autonomous young woman at a time when men set the tone. She not only painted, but drew, made prints and photographed, decisively contributing to the history of art over her nearly 60-years-long career. But she became known as Wassily Kandinsky’s partner, although he was in another relationship when they came together and later married someone else. Münter not only shared her love for bicycling with him, but art as well. She was a member of the Neue Künstlervereinigung in Munich (N.K.V.M.) and actively participated in the Blauer Reiter alma-nac. We are indebted to her that a significant proportion of the artworks by members of the Blauer Reiter survived World II and the post-war era and could later be made available to the public again. It is likewise impressive that she was one of the few women to exhibit at documenta 1 in 1955.
Gabriele Münter large previously large stood in the shadow of Wassily Kandinsky and the Blauer Reiter. Her accomplishments are now celebrated in this profusely illustrated biography. Karoline Hille traces her life’s story with all its high and low points and also extensively occupies herself with Münter’s oeuvre.
